The Spanish iGaming sector has demonstrated significant growth in the second quarter of 2023, with Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) reaching €312.6 million.
This marks a substantial 55% year-on-year increase and nearly a 3% sequential GGR rise, according to data from the Spanish regulator, the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ).
Player deposits experienced a noteworthy increase of 19.6% in Q2 2023 compared to the same quarter in 2022, although there was a slight 2% decline when compared to the previous quarter. In contrast, withdrawals increased by approximately 3% year-on-year but decreased by 2.3% sequentially.
When breaking down GGR by game segments, betting accounted for 42.64%, bingo for 1.13%, casino for 47.94%, contests for 0.04%, and poker for 8.24% of the total.
The betting segment stood out with a remarkable 119% increase compared to the same quarter in the previous year. Conventional sports betting experienced a 1.8% increase, while live betting surged by 3.5% compared to the previous quarter. Horse racing bets, however, saw a remarkable increase of approximately 23%, while other bets declined by 16%.
Bingo showed solid growth with a 5.5% boost year-on-year, while the casino segment witnessed an annual increase of 28%. Notably, slot machines recorded an almost 30% increase, and live roulette surged by 31.8%.
Poker reported a substantial year-on-year increase of 27.6%.
In the second quarter of 2023, among the 78 licensed operators in the Spanish market, 50 were casino operators, 43 were sports betting operators, nine were poker operators, and three were bingo operators, with two falling into the contest category.
Marketing spend increased by 7.6% year-on-year, reaching €96.64 million in Q2 2023, with advertising expenses also demonstrating robust growth, increasing by 7.7% annually.
Spending on affiliates surged by 56.2% compared to the previous year, while spending on sponsorships experienced a substantial year-on-year increase of 225.2%.
Lastly, new accounts decreased by 3% annually.
